British trade unions and the Palestine - Israel Conflict

That Unison facilitates palestinian events and and sponsors palestinian groups should not mean that it needs to prevent the Trade Union Friends of Israel from holding a stall at the Unison conference. Doing this was undemocratic and could be interpreted as Unison wishing to prevent informed debate on the conflict within the union.

Unison being partisan in its behaviour will not help in brokering a fair and peaceful resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict.

If British trade unions are interested in helping bring about peace in the middle-east then constantly attacking Israel, calling for boycotts and pandering to extremist palestinian factions will not help in finding a solution.

Only a resolution to the Palestine-Israel conflict that is fair to both Israel and the Palestinians will endure and enable both peoples to live side by side or even together in peace.

The two peoples live cheek by jowel and will sooner or later need to learn to live in peace with each other in two neighbouring states. That this has not happened yet means that both israelisi and palestiinians need the help of the outside world.

In Northern Ireland the condemning of one side as apartheid and promoting boycotts would not have enabled the bringing about of the Stormont agreement.

In the interest of helping resolve the Palestine-Israel conflict unions in the UK should be wary of taking partisan positions which will serve only to stoke up the conflict.
